Pharmacoepidemiology

Course content

The course is an introduction to the field of pharmacoepidemiology. Pharmacoepidemiology bridge the fields of clinical pharmacology and epidemiology by investigating use and effects of drugs in large study populations. The course will go through the most used methods study designs and data sources, including the Danish National Prescription Registry. At the course we will work with designing and planning of pharmacoepidemiological studies. We will further critically review literature within different areas of pharmacoepidemiology. At the end of the course, we will combine the gained knowledge to write a project proposal for a pharmacoepidemiological study.

Learning outcome

After completing the course, the students are expected to:

Knowledge

  • Account for the most used pharmacoepidemiological methods, data sources, and study designs.
  • Read and appraise scientific literature regarding pharmacoepidemiology

Skills

  • Identify strengths and limitations in pharmacoepidemiological studies
  • Critically evaluate used data sources
  • Communicate and present findings from pharmacoepidemiological studies

Competencies

  • Design and assess pharmacoepidemiological studies
  • Appropriately interpret epidemiological data within pharmacoepidemiology
  • Write a proposal for a research project within the area of pharmacoepidemiology

Lectures mixed with problem-based learning in small groups

Extract from books, scientific papers, reports, project proposals

It is expected that the students have a fundamental knowledge of epidemiological methods, including data sources, exposure and outcome, study designs, bias, and confounding.

Type of assessment
Written assignment, in smaller groups
Oral exam on basis of previous submission under invigilation
Type of assessment details
The students are in groups expected to write a proposal for a research project within the area of pharmacoepidemiology. The project proposal should be handed in a few weeks after the teaching has come to an end and will be the basis of an oral examination approximate two weeks later.
