ØST, Dialogues on Belonging and Recognition in Eastern Europe and the Nordic Countries (E26)
Course content
Drawing on theoretical frameworks from social constructivism, nationalism studies, memory studies and minority theory, we will examine how social, cultural, and political structures influence inclusion and exclusion. Alongside academic readings, we will engage with a range of cultural texts—including film, literature, and podcasts—to understand how these themes are represented and contested in different contexts. Additionally, there will be voluntary museum visits to relevant spaces.
Focusing on communities such as the Sámi, Roma, Kashubians, Jews, Germans, and others across Poland, the Balkans, Russia, Denmark, and Sweden, the course investigates topics including: Legislative status and protection of minority groups, migration, diaspora, and transnational belonging, language politics and cultural preservation, Holocaust and war memory (with emphasis on Poland, Denmark, and Germany, postwar identity and conflict in the Balkans, and Chechen and Ukrainian experiences in Russia).
The course combines classroom discussions with experiential learning through meetings with key stakeholders working in cultural, social, civic society and policy contexts. Together, we will develop a nuanced understanding of how belonging and recognition are negotiated across diverse societies in Europe today.

However, primary texts and media may include the Danish Oscar-winning film Flugt (Flee), Marian Marzyński’s documentary Shtetl, Jesse Eisenberg’s A Real Pain, Nikita Mikhalkov’s 12, selections from Dubravka Ugrešić’s writings and selections from the Roma podcast series Echoes of Memory, and theoretical works such as Will Kymlicka's book Multicultural Citizenship: A Liberal Theory of Minority Rights, Michael Rothberg’s Multidirectional Memory, Katka Reszke’s The Return of the Jews, and Anna Konik’s In the Same City, Under the Same Sky.

Academic targets
At the examination, the student can demonstrate:
- Knowledge and understanding of
- a specifically studied topic within East European literature, history, society or culture.
Skills in:
- carrying out a systematic literature search for the chosen topic and assessing the quality and views of the literature found
- analysing sources
- adopting a critical approach to both sources and secondary literature
- using terminology and research methodology appropriate for the topic chosen
- writing a well-structured presentation of the subject matter based on a clearly formulated issue.
Competencies in:
- processing complex material with a view to understanding correlations and solving problems within the subject area studied
- communicating complex contexts in good and nuanced Danish or English.
Syllabus
The student compiles his/her own syllabus of at least 1,200 standard pages. The syllabus must be approved by the examiner. Seminar, class instruction or individual supervision.
Exam provisions
Form of exam: Take-home assignment, optional subject.

Regulations for group exams: The exam can only be taken individually.

Make-up exam/resit: Conducted in the same manner as the ordinary exam.

- academic terminology and theoretical approaches to this theme

- formulating an academically relevant issue
- identifying and applying relevant sources and secondary literature
- adopting an analytical and critical approach to the sources used and to secondary literature
- producing an independent analysis of the issue in writing
Competencies in:
- using the relevant academic terminology in an extensive analysis
- communicating the analysis in a coherent, written presentation
