ØST, History of Russia (E26)

Course content

The course covers the main lines of Russia’s history up to the present day and introduces key theoretical concepts, scholarly debates, and historical-analytical methods based on selected sources. It is structured around a series of readings that combine empirical and conceptual materials. Lectures help students connect key themes and acquire contextualized knowledge of the field, while seminars, assignments, and in-class discussions focus on the most contested issues in Russian history and develop practical approaches to the study of the region’s political, social, and intellectual history.

Learning outcome

At the examination, the student is able to demonstrate:

 

Knowledge of
•    The main characteristics of the historical development of Russia up to the present
•    Available sources to the history of the country(-ies) studied.
•    Relevant concepts and theoretical approaches for analysing historical processes
 
Skills in
•    identifying and discussing significant issues within the history and cultural history of the country(-ies) studied.
•    identifying, applying and adopting a critical approach to sources of different types  
•    understanding, explaining and applying concepts relevant to history as an academic discipline

 

Competencies in
•    presenting and discussing historical correlations in a factually consolidated and structured manner 
•    presenting and discussing examples of causality in history while applying relevant concepts  
•    active participation in academic discussions
•    oral presentation of own work in a clear and academic manner
 

Class-based teaching with lectures, discussions, and presentations. Particular emphasis is on developing oral communication skills.

The examiner sets a syllabus of maximum 600 standard pages of academic literature.

Oral examination, 30 minutes including assessment
Type of assessment details
Set oral examination with preparation.
The student draws one question out of 10–15 possible options, has 30 minutes to prepare, gives a 10-minute presentation, and answers questions from the examiner and the external examiner (15 minutes).
Group exam regulations: The exam can only be taken individually.
Exam language: English.
