MIS, Hindi Urdu Propaedeutics 1 (E26)
Course content
The course aims to teach communicative Hindi-Urdu at the baseline level (A1). In the beginning, students choose one of the language variants (Hindi or Urdu) and learn either the Nāgarī script or the Arabic alphabet (reading, writing, transliteration and transcription).
Then, basic knowledge of Hindi-Urdu is trained: Students learn to interact at an elementary level by using sentences to describe and narrate elementary aspects of everyday life.
Regarding the grammatical structures, the course focuses on elementary nominal and verbal morphology as well as on the structures of the simple sentence.

After completing the course, the student will be able to demonstrate:
Knowledge and understanding of
- the Nāgarī or Arabic writing system
- basic forms of expression in the language studied to describe and narrate elementary aspects of everyday life
- the phonology, morphology and syntax of the language studied at the baseline level.
Skills in
- communicating aspects of everyday life at the baseline level.
- translating sentences in the language studied at the baseline level grounded in insights into lexicon and grammar.
Competencies in
- communicating aspects of everyday life in the language studied at the baseline level.
- analysing and explaining linguistic structures at at the baseline level.
Classroom teaching with active participation of the students. Classroom teaching involves training of communicative skills, written and oral grammar exercises, text reading and translation and grammatical analysis.

- The ongoing test consists of 5 short oral presentations (2
minutes each) and 2 on-site written exams (1 hour each) distributed
throughout the semester.
All parts of the exam carry the same weight and must be at a passing level for the overall exam to be passed.
Group exam regulations: The exam can only be taken individually.
