Academic Writing for Undergraduate Students (CIP)

Course content

Good academic writing is clear, precise, and persuasive. It engages critically with source material and communicates ideas effectively. Well-written texts contribute to conversations with peers both within and across disciplines.

 

This course, delivered through a series of interactive seminars, provides you with the opportunity to write in English within your own field of study, discuss your writing with international peers and receive constructive feedback. Through regular writing practice, you will strengthen both your research and communication skills.

 

Choose a research problem to investigate (for example, a subject in your major courses). As the semester unfolds, follow the stages of researching and writing as two interlinked processes:
- focus your research question,
- find and review relevant literature,
- collect the best evidence to argue for the importance of your research project.

 

  • Read like a writer. Analyse model texts and sample texts written by your peers to better understand rhetorical strategies and stylistic conventions of selected academic text types. 

 

  • Practise writing and giving feedback. Draft four sections of your research paper: an abstract/summary of your research question/problem, an extended definition of a key concept, a literature review and an argumentative synthesis. You will discuss these drafts with your peers and receive comments from your tutor.

 

The semester of reading, writing and exchanging ideas with international peers from various disciplines will help you to become a better academic communicator. This course will assist you in your future writing, not only in English, but also in your other languages.

Only BA students can register for this course. Please note that ‘Academic Writing for Undergraduate Students’ is similar to the writing component of ‘Academic English’; therefore, you should not register for both the courses.
Students enrolled in the English Studies BA programme at UCPH are not eligible to take this course.
MA students are not eligible for this course; instead, they should choose ‘Academic Writing for Graduate Students’ and/or ‘Presentation Techniques for Graduate Students.’

Type of assessment details
The continuous assessment comprises the following elements distributed throughout the semester:

1. Home assignments (4-10 standard pages):
1.1. Four written assignments submitted during the semester.

2. In-class oral examinations (20 minutes):
2.1. Two oral peer-feedback sessions conducted in class.

3. On-site written exams (3 hours):
3.1. Four written on-site exams during the semester, in which you analyse texts
and provide peer feedback.
3.2. During the final class session: A 1.5-hour on-site exam assessing topics
covered throughout the semester.

All assignments must be written in English.

The examination is graded according to the Danish 7-point scale. The home assignments account for 40% of the final grade, the oral examinations account for 5%, and the on-site written exams account for 55%.

Subject element exam. Home assignment and oral examination. Home assignment: 11-15 standard pages; oral examination: 30-minute examination including grading. Internal exam with multiple examiners. The home assignment accounts for 30% and the oral exam accounts for 70% of the final grade
