Sustainable Development of Denmark in the World

Affluence and/or Sustainability? Socio-Environmental Histories of Denmark Since 1970.

 

The global quest for sustainable development causes specific challenges for affluent societies like Denmark. Is it possible to promote worldwide equality while solving local and global environmental problems like climate change, and social challenges like inequality? And is it necessary to choose between material affluence and sustainability?

 

The course will introduce the recent socio-environmental history of Denmark in ways that touches a multitude of issues such as social cohesion, pollution, energy, biodiversity, nature, climate change, knowledge production, governance, economy, green jobs, technology, radical protests, environmental conflicts, food and everyday environmentalism. In seminars, discussions and workshops different analytical approaches will be tried when we investigate various strategies towards sustainable development. From the radical grassroots’ demands for social change to the establishment’s preference for technological fixes. The course includes excursions, a daytrip to the forest and guest lectures by climate activists with expert knowledge. Practical seasonal clothing is recommended.

Learning outcome

At the examination, the student can demonstrate:

Knowledge and understanding of

  • the overall themes in a focused study area within the topic of sustain- ability in Denmark
  • details that are relevant to this overall context.

 

Skills in

  • applying research-based knowledge to a special topic within Danish culture and society
  • understanding and reflecting on a special aspect of Danish culture
  • different explanations for the development of modern Denmark
  • putting this in the perspective of e.g. European cultural history.

 

Competencies in

  • taking an analytical approach to the focused study of an element of Danish history, culture, and society.

Written take-home assignment, optional subject.
Internal exam with one examiner.
The exam can be taken individually, or in groups of two or three students with individual assessment. Each participant's contribution must be a rounded whole that is clearly identified in the text so that it can be judged separately. The joint contribution of the participants may not exceed 50%. The scope of the home assignment in group exams is: 17-21 standard pages (2 students), 25-29 standard pages (3 students).
