OLD, Objects and Society: Material Culture Studies (E26)

Course content

Objects surround us at all times, and some have been with us for millennia. They enable, constrain, protect, wound, and define us; they can bring comfort or joy and can also provoke conflict or hatred. This course introduces students to the interdisciplinary study of material cultures from, among other regions, the ancient Middle East, Egypt, and Mesoamerica, and discusses how archaeologists, historians, and ethnographers study, engage with, and interpret objects, technologies, and other material remains. The course covers technological processes and the production of objects, as well as how they are interpreted and made meaningful in the present. Different approaches to objects—such as aesthetic, technological, and literary—will be included. By viewing objects as social agents, the course also examines how material culture shapes perceptions of society, both in the past and today, as representatives of human agency.
