OLD, Introduction to the Ancient Cultures of Egypt and Mesopotamia (E26)
Course content
The course addresses the culture and history of ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia from the invention of writing to the Roman period. Based on textual sources and material culture, the course focuses on political and social conditions, art, literature and science, religion, as well as funerary practices. The course begins with a concise presentation of Assyriology and Egyptology, the subjects’ empirical bases, and a geographical introduction to these regions. The core component of the course consists of two strands: a chronological strand, which presents the most important historical phases and their defining characteristics, and a thematic strand, which focuses on key aspects of the respective cultures.

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to demonstrate:
Knowledge of:
- central aspects of the culture and history of Egypt and Mesopotamia from the invention of writing to the Roman period, including political and social conditions, art, literature and science, religion, and burial practices
- the nature and scope of the source material
- basic methodological and theoretical approaches within the disciplines.
Skills in:
- engaging with historical problems
- assessing and explaining the use of sources at a basic level
- reading and engaging with scholarly literature at a basic level
- using traditional and digital media for information retrieval.
Competencies to:
- communicate the cultural history of the region orally at a basic level
- take responsibility for your own learning
- analyse scholarly literature in foreign languages.
Lectures, museum visits.
The examiner is responsible for compiling a syllabus of 2000 standard pages.
