Course content

The course explores different forms of cultural production in the Middle East from both a historical and a sociological perspective. Selected examples of Middle Eastern cultural production are critically analysed within their context of production and in connection to their reception in the different ME-societies.

Learning outcome

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to demonstrate:

 

Knowledge and understanding of

• selected concepts, theories and methodologies for the analysis of the cultural production (e.g. literature, theatre, film, media and music) in the Middle East

• the general circumstances under which cultural products are created and circulated in the area of study in a given historical period

• the reception of selected cultural products in, and their influence on, the societies in which they are created

• cultural products as aesthetic works per se.

 

Skills in

• critically and thoughtfully applying theories and methodologies for the analysis and contextualisation of cultural products in the studied language

• using secondary literature in the studied language

• providing written reports (using also the studied language) on some aspects of the cultural production in the Middle East

• identifying relevant cases depicting the social conditions under which cultural products are created

• shedding light on how cultural products contribute to triggering and influencing public debates on cultural, social or political developments within a given period in the ME.

 

Competencies to

• apply specialized knowledge of the cultural production in the Middle East in communicating with a broader audience

• independently formulate and define research questions to conduct a methodologically sound and critically based analysis of the general conditions under which cultural products in a Middle Eastern are created and the role they play in social life

• carrying on discussions of complex cultural issues in a written form using the studied language.

Lectures, class-based teaching with discussions, and supervision seminars.

It is a requirement for the syllabus that at least 150 standard pages of primary sources and/or secondary literature in the studied language are included. The syllabus is prepared by the student and approved by the examiner at a time determined by the examiner and announced in Absalon.
