Course content
HELGA. Scandinavian Cloth Culture AD 700–1100
Based on research from the projects Textile Resources in Viking
Age Landscapes and Fashioning the Viking Age this
course focuses on new and archaeologically well-founded
interpretations and reconstructions of clothing, and furthermore
the use and needs of furnishing and maritime textiles. Given the
significant impact of textiles and textile production on the
social, economic, and cultural changes in this time period, the
course also aims to provide insights and perspectives on how to
integrate textiles and textile production into a broader
archaeological context.
After an introduction to Viking Age cloth culture - including woven
textiles, twining, looping, netting, and the use of animal skins -
you will experiment with basic textile technologies such as fibre
identification and textile analysis. Using reconstructed tools, you
will explore techniques including fibre preparation, spinning,
weaving, and dyeing. The course also includes landscape analysis of
textile resources, combined with investigations of textile tools
and contexts, to understand the variation, organisation, and impact
of textile production in Viking Age society.
The course is interdisciplinary, and during its duration you will
be introduced to methods in natural sciences, digital tools,
terminology, Old Norse texts, and experimental archaeology – all
approached from a humanistic perspective.
Throughout the course, you will attend lectures by visiting
experts, participate in practical exercises and experimental work,
and visit key sites such as the National Museum, Brede, Land of
Legends in Lejre, and other relevant locations.
