HELGA. Understanding ancient literature
Course content
HELGA. Understanding ancient literature
The term Ancient novel refers to a less-known literary genre with clear features that have been significantly redefined by Greek and Latin authors between I and IV centuries.
Through a focus on this genre and the reading of translated
texts, the course aims to provide an in-depth exploration of late
antique Greek and Latin literature. By analyzing and discussing
selected representative texts, the course will examine the
literary, stylistic and cultural characteristics of the genre, as
well as the distinctive features of individual works.
In the first part of the course, we will analyze the common traits
among the works under consideration, as well as the challenges
these novels present in terms of classification, reception,
dissemination, and critical interpretation.
In the second part, we will conduct an in-depth analysis of
specific texts—read independently by the students—to explore their
unique characteristics and examine how each author adapts the
genre’s defining features.
