Militær og samfund i Mellemøsten (aktuelt emne) (F26)
Kursusindhold
Militaries in the Middle East do far more than engage in armed conflict; they often serve as pivotal institutions that mobilize populations, shape political leadership, and construct collective identities. Historically, armies have acted as key agents of modernization and social change, whether through compulsory conscription that brings citizens from diverse backgrounds into contact, or through the central role of high-ranking officers who transition into political leadership.
This course explores the complex relationship between militaries and societies across the Middle East. Drawing on interdisciplinary readings—political science, sociology, history, anthropology, gender studies, and security studies—students will examine how militaries have influenced state formation, regime stability, national identity, social hierarchies, and regional geopolitics. Case studies include Egypt, Iraq, Israel/Palestine, Turkey, Iran, the Gulf states, and other relevant contexts. Students will engage with historical legacies (e.g., colonial armies, post-independence military roles), contemporary security dynamics (e.g., civil wars, counterinsurgency), and the interplay of military institutions with issues such as religion, nationalism, paramilitary and militant actors and socioeconomic development.
