Analysis of Digital Media
Course content
The course introduces to digital media and their theory, history, aesthetics, function, and impact on society. After an introduction to different theoretical perspectives on media (e.g. medium theory and medialization theory) we will turn to topics such as media archaeology and -materiality, digital publics and political communication, media use and participatory culture, misinformation and surveillance. We analyze social media (e.g. Facebook and Twitter), digital visual media (e.g. photography), and other forms of digital media.
Students can expect an active semester with smaller written assignments, analytic assignments, presentations, and discussions. The course concludes with a written assignment (groups possible).

Knowledge and understanding of:
- the history of forms of digital communication
- the most significant theories that describe the aesthetics, function and importance of digital media
- central problems in relation to digital media.
Skills to:
- describe and analyse digital media’s history, aesthetics, function and importance
- describe and analyse digital media’s special characteristics and potential affordances
- describe and analyse digital media’s forms of communication and infrastructures.
Competencies to:
- apply and evaluate the theories, methods and concepts employed in the analysis of digital media
- apply and discuss relevant theories in the analysis of specific digital media
- reflect on digital media’s aesthetic and communication in relation to their historical and cultural contexts.

Students at Communication and IT are not allowed to follow this module.

Active class participation is defined as:
- Approval of at least 3 of the 6 set assignments of max. 1½ standard page each.
- At least 75% attendance in classes.

The use of AI as an aid in exams is permitted with the following provisions:
- 1) There must be no AI-generated text in any submitted written work (such as assignments, writing exercises, final exam papers).
- 2) Any other use of generative AI (exploratory, idea-generating, discussing, summarizing, research-related, etc.) must be specified and described in a short explanatory section at the end of the written work. The explanatory section does not count towards the length of the written material.
All students submitting written work must upload the ' Declaration of Use of Generative AI Tools' in Digital Exam.
