ENG: Engelsk sprog: sprogbrug og variation
Kursusindhold
Building on the first semester course English Linguistics: System, Structure and Function, English Linguistics: Use and Variation takes you further into the world of linguistics and sociolinguistics. You will learn about variation in the English language across registers, lects, styles, and social environments as well as situational and geographical contexts. You will also learn about the use of English as a lingua franca in multilingual contexts, and how linguistic variation can be applied strategically in real-world contexts.
In the course you will be introduced to linguistic theory relevant for analysing English language use and variation, including sociolinguistic theory on language ideologies, norms and attitudes. You will also learn about quantitative and qualitative methods for analysing English language use and variation, including digital methods and tools. You will gain the ability to reflect upon how linguistic choices affect communication and interaction.
You will work with a project-based element where you will use linguistic theories and methods to analyse problems related to English language use, language choice, language ideologies or linguistic variation. In this part of the course, you will gain experience doing problem-based projects, giving and receiving peer feedback and writing an academic project report in English.
The course provides foundational skills and knowledge for third and fourth semester courses, including Translation in Society and the Interdisciplinary Project Subject, and for projects within linguistics and sociolinguistics.

The course consists of one weekly lecture and a weekly three-hour seminar, involving class discussions, group work, peer feedback and exercises. All classes are taught in English.
