Experimental Methods 2
Course content
The course focuses on advanced experimental methods in cognitive psychology including designing and conducting own of experiments. The student will be working with design of experiments, programming of experiments, collection of data, initial data processing, advanced statistical analyses and interpretation of data.

On completion of the course, students should be able to:
Knowledge:
- describe different forms of experimental design.
- provide reasons for choosing an experimental design.
- provide reasons for choosing advanced methods of analysis of experimental data.
Skills:
- design experiments using standard experimental software (including open software).
- validate data in one’s own design.
- conduct advanced analyses of own experimental data in light of relevant experimental literature.
- use and integrate methodological tools from a variety of disciplines.
- write a research report of an experimental study, including methods, results, and discussion in relation to the existing research literature.
Competences:
- develop own experimental projects in groups.
- interpret results of own experiments in light of chosen design, statistical methods of analysis, and relevant literature.
- identify and evaluating possible sources of error in own experimental data and results.
- manage an interdisciplinary working process and project.
The classes consist of lectures, seminar classes and work in groups.
250 standard pages of compulsory literature and 250 standard pages of self-selected literature. The literature consists mostly of recent research papers and methodological literature. The syllabus is provided in the course room on Absalon and is subject to changes depending on teachers and topics.

Course requirements corresponding to Cognitive Psychology (BA in Psychology) and Statistics 1 and Statistics 2 (BA in Psychology).

The home assignment is free. Limitations in scope: maximum 10 normal pages.
The oral examination:
The oral examination is without preparation.
Only certain aids allowed: students are only allowed to bring their written exam paper (the experiment report) and optionally a computer-based slide-show.
Groups of 2 students 40 minutes. Groups of 3 students is 50 minutes.
Details
The assessment time includes 10 minutes voting and feedback. The home assignment weighs approximately ½ of the assessment. The home assignment and the oral examination must each be assessed as passed individually. Each student’s contribution(s) must always be clearly indicated in the assignment. The home assignment is an experiment rapport, it must have a maximum of 10 standard pages (excluding appendices of analysis programs, etc.) made by the group. It must be handed in at the end of the course. The exam will be completed individually if there is such a large drop-out rate in the group that only one student from the group submits the home assignment or shows up for the oral examination. If so, the oral examination time is 30 min. - Examination prerequisites

Same as the ordinary exam. New home assignment based on a distributed dataset followed by an oral exam.
The home assignment is an experiment rapport. The exam can only be taken as an individual exam. Extent: The student is given 7 days to write the paper with a maximum of 10 standard pages. The oral exam time is 30 minutes including 10 minutes voting and feedback.
Criteria for exam assessment
Students are assessed on the extent to which they master the
learning outcome for the course.
To obtain the top grade “12”, the student must with no or only a few minor weaknesses be able to demonstrate an excellent performance displaying a high level of command of all aspects of the relevant material and can make use of the knowledge, skills and competencies listed in the learning outcomes.
To obtain the passing grade “02”, the student must in a
satisfactory way be able to demonstrate a minimal acceptable level
of the knowledge, skills and competencies listed in the learning
outcomes.
