Advanced Cognitive Psychology

Course content

Advanced cognitive psychology focuses on advanced theories and methods within important areas of cognitive psychology, e.g., perception, attention, decision making, problem solving, cognitive development and social cognition. The course will give the students insights into the most recent research in cognitive psychology. The emphasis will be on research methods based on experimental cognitive psychology and neuroscience as well as advanced statistical analyses and experimental data.

Learning outcome

On completion of the course, students should be able to:

 

Knowledge

  • account for theories in advanced cognitive psychology.
  • account for methods in advanced cognitive psychology and analyses of experimental data.

 

Skills

  • discuss experiments in cognitive psychology in light of theories and methods.
  • interpret empirical data and results in cognitive psychology in light of theories and methods.
  • integrate methodologies and theories from several scientific disciplines in the study of behavior.

 

Compentencies

  • discuss and evaluate advanced experimental and statistical methods in scientific articles with aim of critically assessing hypotheses, experimental designs, methods of analysis, and results.

The classes consist of lectures and exercises.

750 standard pages of compulsory literature.

The literature consists mostly of recent and cutting-edge research papers from scientific journals. The syllabus is provided in the course room on Absalon and is subject to changes depending on teachers and topics.

Oral exam with preparation.

At the exam, the student draws 1 question in the form of an article from the syllabus list.
Group regulations:
The exam can only be taken as an individual exam.
Extent: The exam time is 45 minutes including 10 minutes grade deliberation and feedback. The examinee prepares for 15 minutes before the exam.
Examination prerequisites

To qualify for the exam, the student must have participated in at least one group presentation (the number will be determined by the course responsible).

Students are assessed on the extent to which they master the learning outcome for the course.
 

To obtain the top grade “12”, the student must with no or only a few minor weaknesses be able to demonstrate an excellent performance displaying a high level of command of all aspects of the relevant material and can make use of the knowledge, skills and competencies listed in the learning outcomes.


To obtain the passing grade “02”, the student must in a satisfactory way be able to demonstrate a minimal acceptable level of the knowledge, skills and competencies listed in the learning outcomes.
