Companion Animal Cardiology - Advanced Clinical Cardiology

Course content

The purpose of this course is to further develop the skills and competencies of the student within the discipline of veterinary clinical cardiology in companion animals. The level of prior knowledge and skills within cardiology from the first part of the master-education will further be developed into an advanced level qualifying the student to work independently at a specialist level. In theory and by practical exercises to extend the participants knowledge, professional skills and competences within the subject of clinical cardiology at a specialist level.

Learning outcome

Having completed the course, the participant should be able to:

Knowledge
• Define, identify and discuss evidence-based decision making within advanced clinical cardiology
• Explain, reflect about and demonstrate a complete overview of systematic clinical approach to the cardiovascular patient at an advanced specialised level
• List, classify, and demonstrate critical reflection on the most current and novel approaches to patient diagnosis, therapy, management at a specialised level of clinical cardiology using comparative aspects to human cardiology where applicable
• List, classify and demonstrate critical reflection of research methods, research study design and research presentation in specialised scientific veterinary and human cardiology journals

Skills
• Communicate effectively verbally and in writing and being capable of discussing issues within the specialisation-area with professional colleagues in private practice, in academia and in research institutions within the area of specialised clinical cardiology.
• Continuously seek out, reflect on and apply new evidence based methods and solution models within veterinary- and human cardiology where applicable.
• Work systematically and effectively in the specialisation-area, having knowledge and understanding of the area at the highest international level
• Master advanced practice skill/tools in combination with theoretical knowledge such as color doppler imaging, tissue doppler imaging, 3D imaging and Holter-recording.

Competences
• Evaluate and manage specialised cardiovascular medical and surgical cases
• Work independently, take responsibility for, predict, prognosticate and make decisions at a specialised cardiovascular level using most current diagnostic and therapeutic methods such as Tissues Doppler imaging, Strain and Strain-rate imaging and interventional cardiology.
• Collaborate constructively within and between specialists/professionals and lay persons involved in cardiovascular patient management of specialized cases requiring heart surgery (such as PDA, PRRA), catheter based surgical procedures (such as PDA, PS) or pacemaker implantation.
• Make ethic considerations regarding diagnostic methods and therapies and place these into perspective such as cardiovascular screening programs in susceptible cat and dog breeds
• Independently evaluate and structure own learning processes and continuously obtain new knowledge at a specialty level within advanced clinical cardiology
• Take responsibility for the continuing education of staff working in the graduates own clinical to ensure a uniform advanced level of care.

A combination of theoretical lectures, demonstrations, hands-on practice and case-based practice. Case-study work.

Updated literature list will be posted 1 month prior to course start. The participant should have theoretical knowledge updated prior to participation.
