Sport Psychology and Identity
Course content
The course provides an introduction to sport and exercise psychology and associated psychological theories and methods. Theories will be related to various contexts, including elite sport, sport and exercise at the broader community level, and sport and healthy lifestyle.
BSc programme in Exercise and Sport Sciences
Knowledge:
The students will:
- Obtain basic knowledge of mainstream theories in sport and health psychology focusing, among other topics, on motivation, identity, and emotion.
- Obtain knowledge about the methodological applications of these psychological concepts and theories in various sports and health contexts.
- Develop understanding and knowledge of main behavioural processes studied in sport and exercise psychology .
- Develop knowledge about the use of self-reflection and shared reflection in different practice contexts.
Skills:
The students will acquire skills to:
- Reflect upon and evaluate the relevance of psychological concepts and theories in relation to the understanding of psychological phenomena within sport, exercise and healthy lifestyle.
- Compare different psychological concepts and theories, and relate these concepts and theories to different sport-related situations and problems.
- Assess the importance of mental and behavioural processes occurring within different settings relating to sport, exercise and healthy lifestyle.
- Reflect upon and discuss a case study in sport and exercise psychology.
Compentencies:
The students will be able to
- Identify psychology and behaviour science theories and methodological approaches that are relevant for different contexts within sport-, exercise- and healthy lifestyle.
- Account for the choice of relevant psychological concepts and theories in relation to a given problem within these domains.
- Analyze, reflect upon and evaluate a given issue related to mental and behavioral processes within the sport, exercise and healthy lifestyle domains.
- Find one's own role in working with the wellbeing and development of individuals and groups in sport, exercise and healthy lifestyle contexts.
Lecture, group assignments, pair coaching, case studies.
Literature is provided before the start of the course at Absalon.
The students give each other mutual feedback on exercises, in which they have been working and learning skills in sport psychology. The lecturer provides feedback on the written assignments that are delivered during the course - either as general feedback to the class or to the specific groups or single individuals.

- Written assignment, which is made individually, or in groups of
2-3 students.
The assignment consists of max. 5, 10 or 15 standard pages* for individual exam, groups of 2, or group of 3 people, respectively. In case of group assignment, in the report you have to clearly specify the contributions of each student (this has to be done to allow individual assessment).
*A standard page is 2400 characters including spaces. Title page, reference list, appendices etc. are not included in the page count. Pages exceeding the limit will not be assessed. - Exam registration requirements
