Contaminant Hydrogeology
Course content
(1) Slug/pumping tests and bore hole logging in the field, (2) slug- and pump test theory and analysis, (3) bore hole logging theory and analysis, (4) development of 3D hydrogeological model, and (4) risk analysis by groundwater flow and contaminant transport modeling. The course is a collaboration between the company GEO and Region Hovedstaden. Field investigations will be at one of Region Hovedstadens polluted sites near Copenhagen (oil products and chlorinated ethenes). The goal is to prepare students with the needed theory in an environment as close as possible to every-day-life and in close collaboration with practitioners.
MSc Programme in Geology-Geoscience
Knowledge
- Introduction to how Danish authorities handle contaminated sites to protect groundwater resources
- Practical hydrogeological and geophysical field investigations at point-source contaminated sites
- Theoretical understanding of pump tests and borehole logging
- Application of industry-standard software for interpreting data
- Write-up of ‘industry-like’ reports
Skills
- Borehole logging to interpret geology
- Borehole flow logging (gamma, conductivity, temperature), flow logs (to interpret inflow zones along long screens), and video logs.
- Use of pressure transducers for measuring time series of hydraulic head
- Pumping tests: (a) Capacity tests, (b) multi-step variable pump rate tests, (c) 1 day constant pump tests (drawdown) followed by 1 day recovery tests (pump shut off)
- Advanced pump test analysis (unconfined response, possibility of estimating anisotropy in hydraulic conductivity)
- 3D groundwater flow modelling to evaluate pump test experiment on regional flow and contaminant plume velocity and direction
- Evaluating spatial variability in hydraulic conductivity
- Use of industry-standard software
- Write industry-standard reports
Competences
The course will give students the skills and qualifications for carrying out practical hydrogeological and geophysical investigations in close collaboration with external partners and provide a much broader platform for applying for jobs.
One block of teaching consists of; 1 week of preparation, 1 week
of active fieldwork followed by 5 weeks of analysis of collected
data and groundwater flow and transport modeling.
The course is based on lectures, fieldwork, and report
writing.
