Integrated Sedimentary Systems Analysis
Course content
The course addresses theory, cases, and practical analysis of sedimentary basins based on their sedimentary record. Fundamental theoretical concepts are introduced and related to plate tectonics. Fundamental theoretical concepts are introduced and related to plate tectonics. Emphasis is placed on the practical analysis of the sedimentary record of a selected basin (chosen by the course responsible) to evaluate its formation, evolution, and potential for sustainable development. The practical aspect of the course is based field work (in the week prior to the start of block 4) and subsequent lab work. The course also involves the analysis of other data, which may include seismic sections, well logs, and drill cores. The overall goal of the course is to use geological skills and competencies to obtain an integrated understanding of a sedimentary system.
MSc Programme in Geology-Geoscience
Knowledge:
- Fundamental concepts and theory of sedimentary basin formation, evolution and analyses.
- Basic plate tectonic framework controlling sedimentary basin evolution.
- Key aspects of sedimentology, stratigraphy, and large-scale stratal geometries related to sedimentary basin evolution.
- Aspects of resources and sustainability related to sedimentary basins.
- Key aspects of scientific writing and reporting.
Skills:
- Describe the formation and evolution of sedimentary basins within a plate tectonic framework.
- Classify sedimentary basins within a plate tectonic framework.
- Describe the large-scale stratal geometries and sedimentary successions relating to basin evolution. Describe aspects of resource exploration related to sedimentary basins.
- Identify key aspects of sustainability and resources related to sedimentary basins.
- Analyse the fill of sedimentary basins by the application of data which may include outcrop data, seismic profiles, well logs, and drill cores.
- Plan and conduct field work to collect relevant data for the analysis of a sedimentary system.
- Write a concise, scientific report and prepare an oral presentation.
Competences:
- Explain the fundamental concepts and theory of sedimentary basins.
- Synthesize and explain the relation between sedimentary basin filling history and tectonic evolution of sedimentary basins, both orally and in a written report.
- Synthesize key aspects of sustainability and resources related to sedimentary systems and relate them to sedimentary basin evolution.
- Synthesize the geological evolution of selected sedimentary basins based on the analyses of various data.
- Relate the synthesis to existing literature.
- Evaluate the geological potential for sustainable development initiatives in a selected sedimentary basin.
- Communicate comprehensive understanding of a case through oral presentation and a concise, scientific report.
Combination of practical exercises, ad hoc lectures, workshops, lab work, and field work. The field work typically takes place outside Denmark and always in the week prior to the block start. Please see Absalon course page for a detailed course schedule.
