ASI, Tilgange til Asien- Mapping the Nation(E24)
Kursusindhold
The aim of this course is to experiment with maps of Asia that counter essentialist attempts to reduce the largest continent of the world to the exotic “East”. While we are aware of the fact that we always see the world through the lens of our own culture and experiences, this course sets out to find new ways to map Asia that break with the orientalist matrix of power.
We will explore places in Copenhagen that are related to Asia (esp. China, India, Japan, Korea) and create GIS maps of Copenhagen based on our findings. These places can be, but are not limited to monuments, collections, museums, companies, shops, medical practitioners, archives, cultural institutions, etc. The course will start with a workshop in QGIS (open-source software to analyze geospatial data) in collaboration with KUBs DataLab (Lars Kjær). Additionally, we will invite one or two guest speakers to stimulate the discussion on maps. The maps will capture both the past and the present of Asia in Copenhagen and, by doing so, visualize Copenhagen as a spatial palimpsest.
The course offers four teaching hours per week, combining joint teaching (2 hours) and teaching in the specialized tracks (2 hours, China, Japan, Korea, Modern India & South Asia).
