Introduction to Modern India and South Asia’s History, Culture, and Society 1
Course content
The course introduces the students to the early and modern history of South Asia as a region and to the formation of the separate nation-states that characterise the subcontinent today. Besides creating an overview of the larger strokes of the regional formations throughout Indian and South Asian history, the course integrates cases that show the relevance of past events and their interpretations for present day identity formations. Among the important themes of the course is the history of religion in South Asia as well as of colonialism. Through class interaction and minor writing assignments, the course builds student competences in reading and understanding academic texts and in elementary academic essay writing.
