Course content

Politological course

The course focuses on providing the student with theoretical knowledge, conceptual understanding, and methodological insights at an advanced level for analyzing how the structures and processes of the international system frame societal development and under what conditions societal actors act in the international system. The course presents the classical theories of the IR discipline, including recent developments, as well as alternative theoretical and methodological understandings of the IR discipline. Additionally, there is a focus on students learning to put the chosen theory and method into broader perspective and develop critical reflection on them.

Learning outcome

After completing the course, the student is expected to be able to:

Knowledge

  • Understand classical and contemporary theories, concepts, and methods within the discipline of International Relations.
  • Understand the historical prerequisites for and possibilities for future development of theories and concepts within the discipline of International Relations, and its most significant policy areas.

Skills

  • Identify a scientific argument based on solid professional insight
  • To analyze how international and global structures and processes frame societal developments and under what conditions societal actors act at the international and global level.
  • Present and discuss a scientific argument in writing.

Competencies

  • Apply theory and method to research questions that the student formulates and develops an analysis of.

The course consists of a combination of group classes, seminars and lectures.

Readings for class is 900 pages.

To participate in the exam for International Politics 2, it is a prerequisite that you have passed International Politics 1.
Passing International Politics 2 is a prerequisite for taking the exam in International Politics 3

With a view to its subsequent application in an analysis, the student to a high degree describes and discusses the relevant theoretical and methodological aspects of key policy areas within international politics, the impact of international relations on national societal and political issues, and the options available to a given actor internationally.
