Cancelled Introduction to Molecular Bioscience

Course content

Interactive seminars and tutorials with leading scientists from the Novo Nordisk Foundation Research Center Cluster will introduce a range of current research in biomedicine and biotechnology: including cutting-edge cellular, molecular, and computational approaches to investigation of disease-related proteins and their function, stem cell biology; regulation of metabolism, and cell factory engineering. Participants will discuss important questions within these research areas with expert researchers during the seminars and tutorials, and will develop ideas for interdisciplinary research projects.

Education

MSc in Human Biology – elective course
MSc in Public Health Science – elective course
MSc in Health Informatics – elective course
MSc in Health Science – elective course

Open for other MSc and PhD students in Natural Sciences or Health and Medical Sciences.

Learning outcome

After completing the course the student is expected to:

Knowledge

  • Describe the state-of-the-art for the following research areas:
    • Protein research
    • Stem cell biology
    • Regulation of metabolism
    • Bioengineering

Skills

  • Discuss important questions within these research areas
  • Develop ideas for collaborative projects within these research areas
  • Review topics of interest within these research areas

Competencies

  • Explain topics of interest within these research areas
  • Evaluate ideas for research projects and experiments

Scientific seminars and discussion with teachers (who are Group Leaders working in the research areas covered); one-on-one tutorials with teachers working in areas of interest; and preparation of a two-part written assignment (a short summary of interests followed, after tutorials, by a detailed literature review and hypothesis-driven exploration of a scientific question of own choice).

Note that a version of this course is offered to both MSc and PhD students. It is also part of the Copenhagen Bioscience PhD pre-doc curriculum. All students attend seminars together, but different assignments are set for MSc and PhD to ensure that the course is appropriate for different academic levels.

Recommended scientific literature will be given before/during the course.

The course and assessment are entirely in English: students must be able to understand, speak, read and write scientific English at a high level.

A completed Bachelor degree within the Biomedical and Natural Sciences (e.g. biology, biochemistry, molecular biomedicine, medicine, or similar).

Written
Oral
Individual

Students will get individual oral feedback on their ideas for the topic of the final paper, and will then receive some written or oral feedback on the final written paper.

Type of assessment
Course participation
Written assignment
Type of assessment details
Students must attend and actively participate in tutorials and seminars.

Written assignments:
(1) Short, informal summary of research areas covered by the seminars and own interests within those research areas

(2) Final paper comprising a detailed literature review and hypothesis-driven exploration of a scientific question of own choice (with guidance and assessment from tutorials with course teachers)
Exam registration requirements

Must be registered for the course and have participated in all seminars and tutorials to be eligible to submit the written assignment. Overall assessment is based on both participation and the written assignment.
