Translational Discovery Omics III - Epigenetics, Model Systems, Precision Medicine, and Systems Biology
Course content
The aim of the course is to provide the participants with: i) an overview of theory and application of technologies in epigenetic modification and genomic regulation, ii) a basic overview of modern human tissue and organ models, iii) an overview of possibilities of system biology approaches for integrating omics data in translational research, and iv) an understanding of application of technologies in gut virome and bacterial microbiome research in health and disease.
The main themes covered in the course include:
- Epigenetic modifications and genomic regulation
- Functional genomic analysis
- Gut virome and bacterial microbiome in health and disease
- Model systems and other translational tools
- Online omics resources
- Integrative omics and systems medicine
BRIDGE - Translational Excellence Programme
Upon completing the course, participants should be able to:
Knowledge
- Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of epigenetic modifications on gene regulation.
- Discuss the potential applications of modern techniques to study genomic regulation.
- Have a basic understanding of the potentials of modern tissue and organ models.
- Show comprehension of the principles of human gut virome and bacterial microbiome research.
- Have an awareness of strengths and limitations of system biology methodologies for integrating multiple types of omics data for translational research.
Skills
- Critically evaluate results from studies of omics techniques dealt with in the course.
- Use a range of online databases to obtain omics-related information.
- Design an appropriate omics-based study of human diseases.
Competences
- Understand the central aspects of translational omics and be able to discuss and communicate these to other scientists, clinicians, and the public.
The course is organized with a mix of scientific seminars by
invited speakers, including technical lectures about modern
technologies, and participant-led activities. In addition, the
course will include group work, case studies, and practical
exercises.
The course will end with an evaluation where participants must
reflect on course learning outcomes and give feedback for course
development.
Course literature will be published on Absalon.
Participants must meet the admission criteria in BRIDGE - Translational Excellence Programme.
The BRIDGE – Translational Excellence Programme offers a few selected graduated PhDs a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in translational medicine. The courses are only available to the fellows enrolled in the programme. Fellows are automatically enrolled in the courses upon admission to the programme.
