Numerical Modelling in Coastal, Estuarine and Marine Environments

Course content

Using practical PC-based exercises, this course aims to provide students with a theoretical and practical knowledge on detailed hydrodynamic and geomorphic processes related to the flow of water and transport of sediment in fluvial, estuarine and marine environments. The course consists of two parts: 1) introduction to DHI MIKE software including application of the MIKE Hydro River module.  2) Numerical modelling of coastal, estuarine og marine flows and ensuing sediment transport over larger areas, using the DHI-MIKE21 model complex.

Education

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

Hydrodynamics, sediment dynamics and sediment transport in fluvial, estuarine and marine environments, relationship between sediment transport gradients and morphological change.

Skills:

  • ability to use numerical modelling to simulate hydrodynamics and sediment transport using the DHI modelling tools MIKE Hydro River and MIKE21 FM
  • delimit, prepare and accomplish solutions of fluvial and marine problem complexes using MIKE Hydro River and MIKE21 FM
  • critical model evaluation
  • necessary basic skills to use other models within the DHI model complex

Competences:

Analyse, assess and apply results, methods, theory and data in connection with numerical modelling in coastal, estuarine and marine environments.

The form of teaching is exercises combined with ad hoc lectures. For the teaching plan, please see Absalon.

Selected book chapters and scientific papers.

MIKE Hydro River and MIKE21 documentation suite.

Please see absalon course page for details.

BSc in Geography and Geoinformatics or equivalent is recommended

The course is identical to the discontinued course NGEA09056U Numerical Modelling in Fluvial, Coastal, Estuarine and Marine Environments. Therefore you cannot register for NIGK21000U - Numerical Modelling in Coastal, Estuarine and Marine Environments, if you have already passed NGEA09056U Numerical Modelling in Fluvial, Coastal, Estuarine and Marine Environments.
If you are registered with examination attempts in NGEA09056U Numerical Modelling in Fluvial, Coastal, Estuarine and Marine Environments without having passed the course, you have to use your last examination attempts to pass the exam in NIGK21000U - Numerical Modelling in Coastal, Estuarine and Marine Environments. You have a total of three examination attempts.
