AMIS: Researching Migration - Methodological Approaches

Migration is a subject that calls for interdisciplinary approaches and variety in methods. This course gives an introduction to key disciplines and central methodological discussions of migration studies through lectures, ‘hands-on’ experience with a variety of specific methods, and examples from current research projects on migration. We will consider the fundamentals of the research process, and how to evaluate, choose and combine the appropriate methods depending on the topic. We will also discuss what it means to work inter-disciplinarily and reflect on the specific challenges and predicaments that pertain to studying migration. What challenges, for example, arise when one wants to study movement, borders, unregistered residents or illegal migrants? What are the proper methodological and method considerations as well as the ethical implications at stake? Through a combination of text readings, teaching and practical workshops, the course aims to provide students with the foundation for using and evaluating migration research as well as preparing students for doing research themselves.
