Molecular Biology for Non-life Scientists

Course content

The course will give a brief introduction to very fundamental molecular and cellular biology, and is targeting students with no life science background (e.g. students with a finished BSc programme in Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, etc.)

Subjects include:
DNA repair, replication, transcription and translation. Regulation of gene expression, cell cycle and cell communication. Proteins, intracellular transport, membrane transport and membrane structures.

MSc Programme in Bioinformatics

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

The student will know the basics of molecular biology and genetics, including DNA repair, replication, transcription and translation; regulation of gene expression, cell cycle and cell communication; proteins, intracellular transport, membrane transport and membrane structures.

Skills:

The student will be able to understand and use basic concepts in molecular biology and genetics, including DNA repair, replication, transcription and translation; regulation of gene expression, cell cycle and cell communication; proteins, intracellular transport, membrane transport and membrane structures.

Competences:

The student will be able to communicate the basics of molecular biology and genetics and relate this to other subjects.

Lectures, study groups and exercises mixed (6 hours per week). 4 written assignments with running evaluation. All assignments must be passed to succesfully complete the course.

See Absalon.

This course is aimed at students with no prior knowledge of molecular biology and genetics, such as mathematicians and computer scientists starting in the bioinformatics programme. Students having finished a life science BSc programme such as biology or biomedicine are strongly recommended to choose other courses.

Academic qualifications equivalent to a BSc degree is recommended.
