Cancelled TORS, Cultural Production and Urban Space (Summer School) (S23)

Course content

An international summer school (BA and MA-levels, 7.5 ECTS) at University of Copenhagen. Deadline for applications: 1st of April 2023.

This summer school puts cultural production and event-making in urban space into a conversation with critical urban theory. The summer school aims to enable students to examine and assess the role of the cultural productions and the cultural industry, broadly speaking, within existing political paradigms of urban development such as “creative cities” and “the experience economy” of cities.

Through theoretical perspectives and urban ethnographic methods, students will learn to analyse the symbolic, emotional and socioeconomic dimensions of cultural production in urban space through fieldwork and workshops organised in collaboration with our partners, including the electronic music and event organisation Strøm

The summer school thus provides students with an opportunity to engage critically with experienced cultural producers operating in urban space and learn about the different problems, potentials and considerations connected to urban cultural production. Throughout the summer school, students will, in groups, be working to create their own site-specific cultural production and analyse its purpose and intervention into urban space.

The summer school is centred on a case-based learning approach and through workshops, lectures and field trips, the students will be immersed in theoretical perspectives as well as public debate, learn from practitioners, and gain experience in analysing urban cultural production through case studies and fieldwork.

The summer school will take place from the 1st of August to the 13th of August 2022 (incl. Saturdays and only excl. Sundays; please note that as a student, you will be busy every day for the duration of the summer school and should not plan other activities).

NOTE! Until further notice, the summer school will be held physically in Copenhagen but if needed, the summer school can be rearranged as a partly or fully online course to accommodate existing covid-19 guidelines at the time. A rearrangement to an online format can affect the content of the summer school.

The course is offered through the Global Urban Studies Electives ( and is open to all BA and MA-level students who will be awarded 7.5 ECTS upon passing the exam

Students from any discipline interested in urban studies from Humanities-anchored and interdisciplinary approaches.
