Musikvidenskab: Musikvidenskabeligt emne med performance og produktion: Emne 2 - Stemme Studier

This course examines the concept of vocality in diverse musical and cultural contexts. Through drawing on key concepts in voice studies, we will investigate the material and symbolic role of the voice in musical expression, experience, and meaning with the aim of sharpening our critical listening skills, diversifying our analytical toolkit, and enriching our musical practice as scholars and practitioners who work with voice in myriad ways. Among other things, we will explore the primacy of speech and hearing in normative conceptions of human subjecthood alongside diverse physiologies of vocal production and perception; the dynamic role of voice in the socio-cultural construction of identity and the perception of difference; the naturalized associations between the voice, emotion, and authenticity; the technological mediation of voice; and the politics of digital vocal production. Developing a theoretical and musical vocabulary around voice will ultimately enable us to newly approach the expressive function of vocality in Western music with increased technical precision, as we come to understand the voice as a diverse phenomenological, socio-cultural, and relational phenomenon.
