Students can choose to do an academic internship (15 ECTS credits) as part of their Master’s programme. The internship can only replace the 15 ECTS elective courses that do not need to be anthropological.
The academic internship must be academically relevant to the Master’s programme in Anthropology (for example, by allowing further study or providing practical experience with themes/issues that are key to the study programme; by providing academic and practical experience within a relevant field of work, e.g. in health, the green transition, social initiatives, communication, education, the consultancy industry, organisational development, NGOs, etc; by contributing experience and knowledge within an area that the students want to examine in depth in their Master’s thesis).
The academic internship may be with a public or private company, organisation or institution where academic work is performed and academic staff are employed who can provide academically and professionally relevant supervision.
The purpose of an academic internship is for students to acquire professional experience with:
- working in practice within a relevant anthropological or general academic field of work
- unfolding and developing their anthropological and general academic skills.
In the exam report, the students must demonstrate their ability to:
- reflect analytically on the work of the host organisation and the field in which it works
- consider any further perspectives/opportunities for anthropological work in this field
- include relevant anthropological literature in the presentation.
The teaching in spring 2022 will be online until the 1. of April due to the Covid19 situation.
As soon as it is permitted and justifiable, it is up to the individual lecturer whether to transition to a blended format or wish to continue with full online teaching for the rest of the semester. The individual lecturer will inform you of the above choice in the Absalon room for each course.
Courses with oral exams will be held online if the relevant restrictions have not been lifted at least four weeks before the individual exam. This will be notified in Absalon. Courses with written take home exams will not experience any changes in relation to the normal exam form.
On completion of the academic internship, the students are expected to be able to:
- account for and academically assess the relevance of the study of anthropology to, for example, conditions, institutions, processes and working methods in the labour market, including discussing and demonstrating how anthropological and general academic competences have been applied and developed during the academic internship
- discuss the academic relevance and the academic learning outcome of the academic internship, including reflecting on the strengths and limitations of anthropological competences in relation to the field of work
- understand and describe how anthropologists work specifically with tasks related to the social science/academic labour market, including, if relevant, demonstrating knowledge of their own practice and the practices of other anthropologists.
- give an account and an academic assessment of the purpose and practical course of the academic internship
- include and master relevant anthropological methods in the presentation
- analyse and communicate conditions, processes and/or working methods at the workplace in an academic context.
- perform independent and professional work as well as plan and coordinate tasks in a workplace
- discuss solutions to tasks and contextualise in relation to the work of anthropologists in the field based on academic reflection and practical experience
- be able independently to find and acquire new research-based knowledge that contributes to solutions in the workplace.
A 15 ECTS academic internship corresponds to 237.5 hours of work in the workplace. The student must have an academic contact/supervisor at the workplace to ensure relevant academic sparring.
The internship must be pre-approved by the academic internship coordinator. The pre-approval, which is the signed agreement, is to ensure that the internship is as carefully planned as possible. The agreement is a written binding agreement between the coordinator, the student and the workplace, specifying the rights and obligations of the parties. An agreement template in Danish or English is available on KUnet. The agreement sets out the different items to be covered.

Written assignmentWritten assignmentThe academic internship must be concluded with an individual report in which the internship is evaluated and linked to the study programme in Anthropology.
The report must contain a description of the host organisation, an account of the purpose and the practical work (with a description of tasks) as well as an evaluation of the academic learning outcome of the academic internship.
Length of the report for 15 ECTS credits: minimum 22,500 and maximum 27,500 characters.
