JAP, Introduction to Japan’s History, Culture, and Society 2 (F21)

Course content

This course is the continuation of the course that ran last semester. The course as a whole introduces the history and culture of Japan from ancient times to the present. The structure is broadly chronological.

Last semester you covered the period from 1945 to the present, beginning with the Allied Occupation after Japan’s capitulation at the end of the Second World War.

This semester we will cover the period from prehistory up to the end of the Second World War.

During both semesters, we devote time to research methods and the special demands of academic writing. The evaluation of written sources is central to the study of history and indeed the humanities as a whole. Last semester we concentrated on the evaluation of secondary sources. This semester we will pay particular attention to primary sources, that is, sources written in the historical period under discussion.
