Welfare Foodscapes (Offered for the last time in the academic year 2019-20)

Course content

This course is a project module, with two elements: First an introduction to problem-oriented project work in groups. Second a project-work in groups where students are asked to identify a project topic taking departure in the identified problems related to concrete welfare institutions. 

The projects must be concentrated on topics in the semester theme of welfare foodscapes.

Learning outcome

Students who pass the course will have qualifications as follows

Knowledge and understanding

  • Should have knowledge of the problem based learning and group work process
  • Get a basic understanding of the area of Integrated Food Studies
  • Knowledge and comprehension of method which can be used to answer the formulated problem. 
  • Ability to describe and apply the theoretical approach used in the project


  • Ability to use different mapping methods in welfare foodscapes.
  • Ability to analyze empirical or theoretical cases based on the theoretical and methodological approaches presented in the semester.
  • Should be able to perform a problem analysis and state a problem of an IFS relevant topic


  • Ability to evolve different complexities food and meal topics
  • Ability to reflect on the group process
  • Ability to discuss the different science traditions related to a specific identified food oriented problem and the implications of different methodological approaches.
  • Ability to reflect over the relevance of the chosen problem.

The teaching will be a combination of lectures, and field studies and a group work where groups will be asked to identify a problem when observing and studying selected welfare institutions look at this from different approaches represented in the IFS education. The group work result in a presentation of in plenum at a status seminar.
Following this introduction a project work in groups under supervision of a teacher will be carried out.

Academic qualifications equivalent to a BSc degree is recommended.

Type of assessment
Oral examination, 20 minutes per student
Oral examination in groups on the basis of the written project report. No preparation.
In order to make an individual assessment, students are asked individual questions in addition to questions open to the entire group.
