Protists - Eukaryotic Microbiology
Identification, isolation, nutrition, life histories, fylogeny
and behaviour of unicellular, free-living organisms. The course
includes groups of organisms, which traditionally belong to algae,
protozoa, heterotrophic flagellates, including Heterokontophyta,
Dinophyta, Ciliata, and soil protozoa.
The course will include lectures, colloquia and laboratory-practice. Participants will also carry out an experimental project (about 30 hours) that includes a written report. The course will be concluded by an oral examination.
To give the participants an overview over the diversity and ecological importance of free-living protists. Participants will also be trained in methods for studying protists including different methods for isolation, culturing and identification, including electron microscopy and DNA-based methods.

- present the "tree of life", including describing overall protist-organism groups
- isolate and cultivate protists
- explain nutrition forms and the main ecological niches of protists
- derive general principles across groups of organisms with regard to eg. life history, behavior, cytology
- selecting and applying appropriate techniques for studies of protists
- select relevant literature and discuss their own performance in relation to this
- present and critically discuss original articles
- illustrate selected aspects of protisters biology experimentally and report this in writing
1-2 hours of lectures and approx. 6 hours of exercises per week, incl. a project.
Academic qualifications equivalent to a BSc degree is recommended.

Written assignment, 4 weeksOral examination, 20 minutesThe oral exam is individual with no preparation time. It starts with a 10-minute discussion of the project report followed by a 10-minute examination in Learning Outcome. Written assignment weights for 50% and the oral exam weights for 50%. Both part exams must be passed to pass the course.

In order to obtain the grade 12 the student should convincingly
