CANCELLED, Modernity and moralities in contemporary Buddhism and Sufism

Course content

Rapid global changes affect religious institutions and communities as well as individuals all over the world. The consequences are conflicts, negotiations and new constellations. The followers of Buddhism and Sufism experience it all: new modes of communication give a greater number of tools to interpret holy scriptures and develop new forms of rituals; new life styles raise questions about morals and ethics; and religious authority is executed by other actors than the traditional community leaders. One of the main issues that contemporary religious actors face is how to live a moral, ethical life in the modern world. At a grass roots level as well as within religious institutions, morality encompasses a broad spectrum of argued norms, social discipline and piety practices – all of these issues lie at the core of our discussions in class. Throughout the course we will examine both conceptual approaches for studying modernity and moralities among Buddhist and Sufi groups, as well as take a closer look at ethnographic cases in which these encounters take place drawing on the vast research experience of the instructors. Students will learn not only how to employ the analytical tools gained throughout the course, but also how to generate and collect data through which to apply these tools.
