Geochemistry, Mineralogy and Sedimentology of Carbonate Oil Reservoirs

Course content

Carbonate rocks (chalk) are the main North Sea oil reservoir rock. Yet, the detailed properties of the carbonate rocks can only be understood by considering the geochemical minor components (dominantly Si-based minerals).

Starting with an introduction to the central concepts of carbonate geochemistry, mineralogy, sedimentolog, and diagenesis, this course focus on these minor constituents of the carbonate rocks (layer silicates, silicas, and iron sulphides and their effect on physical properties of the reservoir rock. The minerals will be discussed in relation to chemistry and mineralogy of solids, fluid compositions, and differences in origins (detrital vs. neoformed; inorganic vs. biosynthesized).

Various spectroscopies and scattering techniques will be introduced emphasizing various aspects of composition and structure (long and short range order) of these minerals.

It is the aim of the course to highlight the static and dynamic properties of the carbonate rock reflecting the structural and dynamic chemistry of the minor components in the carbonate rocks.

Learning outcome

The course facilitates competencies in describing and analyzing the structures of secondary minerals in the carbonate reservoirs.

The student will acquire skills in analyzing secondary minerals using state-of-the-art analytical equipment (diffraction and spectroscopy based) and data-treatments.

The course will provide in-depth knowledge of the secondary minerals occuring in and determining the properties of the carbonate reservoir rocks. This will enable the students to choose methodologies and design research project work with the field.
