Plant Infection and Disease Management

Course content

 

The course plan will be based on a selection among the following issues, which demonstrate different aspects of plant disease development and epidemiology in relation to disease management:

 - The disease cycle- Seed health and pathology

- Pathogen population dynamics and forces involved in population changes

- Pathogen and vector dispersal patterns and their importance for disease management

- Plant disease problems in developing countries

- Disease resistance management strategies based on partial, race specific and race-non specific resistance, variety- and species mixtures

- Induced resistance to control diseases

- Biological control measures

- Cultural control measures, chemical control and integrated disease management

- Effects of future climate change on plant diseases and disease management

Learning outcome

The student is expected to gain a broad biologically based comprehension of plant disease development and management strategies. After completing the course the student should have acquired the following:

 Knowledge:

- Describe host-pathogen interactions from pathogen establishment in the host to interactions at population level.

- Give an overview of principles of proper management strategies, based on knowledge of the disease cycle.

 Skills:

- Analyze a disease problem and suggest adequate principles of management of plant diseases based on knowledge of the pathogens and their interaction with the host.

 Competences:

- Apply theory and solve plant disease problems in agricultural and horticultural crops and communicate the results

- Discuss potential ethical problems arising during control of plant diseases, for example human and environmental hazards

Methods will include lectures, colloquial, group work, small theoretical exercises and an essay on a selected topic

Portfolio
Students will be assessed on the basis of a portfolio of deliverables from 6 small individual written exercises, individual contributions in colloquia, a group essay and a final group presentation of the essay.

Weight: The final grade will equally be based on the individual level of participation and quality of the contribution to the written exercises and the colloquia and on the group essay and group presentation.
