IEP; The Archaeology of the Proto-Indo-Europeans: Culture, Language, and Homelands

Kursusindhold

In this course students will explore the archaeology of the cultures and lifestyles of early Indo-European speakers, including Proto-Indo-European (PIE). The course will begin with an introduction to the basic concepts of archaeology, including but not limited to culture and cultural history, material culture and identity, archaeological sampling as well as chronology and radiocarbon dating. With these tools in hand, we will review the steppe and Anatolian hypotheses for the PIE homeland through a critical examination of the material and linguistic evidence, as well as recent studies of the genetics involved. We will investigate why certain linguistic terms have no material correlate in the archaeological record in their respective regions, and discuss possibilities for alternative hypotheses. From there, we will examine subsequent periods of the Bronze Age, including the Middle Bronze Age (ca. 2500-1700 BCE) of the Eurasian steppe seen by many as the precursor for the spread of Indo-Iranian and the Late Bronze Age (ca. 1700-1300 BCE). We will pay particular attention to community breakdown, population dispersal, and the spread of what archaeologists call socio-technological knowledge, such as the knowledge of chariots, into surrounding geographic regions and what this might have meant linguistically. Overall, the course seeks to offer an in-depth and critical exploration of the material culture and languages of the Bronze Age Eurasian steppe and parts of western Asia.
