Course content

The course is concerned with the role of medicines in society and spans a variety of themes with focus on the perspectives of governments, health care professionals, pharmaceutical industry and medicine users.

In addition, students are divided into groups and asked to prepare a scientific literature review article focusing on one specific issue within the field of social pharmacy. Further, students prepare and present an oral presentation on a specific topic, which forms the basis for the written exam.

Learning outcome

On completion of the course participants should be able to:

Knowledge

  • Describe and discuss the major concepts and issues of social pharmacy
  • Describe and discuss the concept of the user perspective

 

Skill

  • Evaluate social science and humanistic approaches/theories of research on medicines
  • Discuss and put into perspective the role of medicines in society, especially the different perspectives of governments, health care professionals, the pharmaceutical industry and medicine users
  • Analyze the experiences and perceptions of the medicine user
  • Analyze, put into perspective and criticize scientific literature in the field
  • Perform effective written and oral presentations of acquired knowledge and ideas

 

Competence

  • Contribute with a social pharmacy perspective on pharmaceuticals issues, especially the perspectives of governments, health care professionals, the pharmaceutical industry and medicine users
  • Independently explore and summarize specific issues within the social pharmacy area

 

Recommended prerequisites

Course teaching is based on the assumption that students have a bachelor’s degree or the equivalent in one of the natural sciences, health sciences or technical sciences.

Students individually write a report on a topic that is part of the curriculum.

Criteria for exam assessment

The written report forms the basis for the final grade. However, the overall performance and participation of the students can result in an adjustment of the grade. These adjustments are based on:

  • Responses and participation in seminars that demonstrate understanding and reflexivity
  • Individual oral presentation
  • Group assignment: written report and oral presentation

 

To recieve the grade 12 the student should be able to:
