Through this course PhD students will learn basic and advanced methodology related to identification and characterization of transporter proteins.

Intra- and intercellular transport of metabolites is key for nutrient acquisition, hormonal growth, cellular homeostasis and for communication and coordination of responses in multicellular organisms.

From a biotechnological perspective transport processes represent attractive targets for modulation of metabolite levels and are the foundation for the emerging field of transport engineering, including control of metabolite accumulation in a tissue-specific manner in crop plants as well as increased yields of commercially valuable compounds produced in synthetic biology approaches. 

Two international leading scientists in the field, Professor Enrico Martinoia, University of Zürich, Switzerland & Professor Ingo Dreyer, University of Talca, Chile, are the core teachers at the course and will be present all week.

The course includes training in:

  1. 1) transporter identification approaches,
  2. 2) biochemical and biophysical characterization (including electrophysiology and LC-MS based transport assays in Xenopus oocytes as well as heterologous expression in lactobacillus),
  3. 3) isolation of vacuoles for characterization of subcellular transport processes,
  4. 4) transporters in drug discovery, and
  5. 5) regulation of transporters as well as examples of innovative applied transporter based projects.
Learning outcome

The course will train the participants in the emerging, challenging and highly promising field of transportomics.

Participation in this course will enable the participants to

  1. 1) get a theoretical and practical understanding of methods within transporter identification and characterization,
  2. 2) get a perspective of the biotechnological potential of transporters,
  3. 3) discuss their projects with experts in the field, and
  4. 4) obtain a network within the field.

The course will feature a combination of lectures, tutorials, panel discussions, laboratory and theoretical exercises, participant presentations, and networking.

A compendium with scientific articles and protocols will be distributed to participants 2 weeks before course begin.

The course is primarily aimed at PhD students but a select number of MSc students may be admitted.

In preparation for the course, students should read all the material in the compendium and prepare and bring a poster (A3 size) about their work. The posters will be presented on the first day of the course.

Criteria for exam assessment

The participants must demonstrate an understanding of the problems being raised during the lectures and exercises.

In order to pass the course active participation in all parts of the course is requested, including student presentations, lectures, discussions, exercises and excursion.
