Physiological Adaptations to Strength Training

Course content

The focus of the course is on the physiological and morphological adaptations accompanying strength training. Main focus is on changes in muscle and tendon morphology, on cellular adaptations and the underlying molecular mechanisms. Possible stimulatory and inhibitory ergogenic aids and concurrent training will be discussed. Another primary focus is on neural adaptations and the underlying mechanisms. The course is based on original research literature and practical laboratory experiments.

Learning outcome


Students will gain knowledge of adaptations occurring at the neural, muscular and tendon level as a result of various forms of strength training. Emphasis is placed on the physiological significance and underlying molecular mechanisms.
Students will gain knowledge of the relationship between adaptations, function, specificity and performance.
Students will acquire a basic knowledge of various experimental models commonly used to study neuromuscular function.


Student will develop skills in analyzing and presenting scientific papers and problems with the aim of evaluating physiological relevance, study design, results, conclusions and perspectives.


The student will achieve competence in critically analyzing scientific papers and experiments, synthesizing knowledge and discussing the content of the articles relative to the background (peer-reviewed) scientific literature.

Lectures and student presentations. Laboratory exercises.

Scientific original and review articles. Uploaded before the course begins at Absalon.

Qualifications in neuro- and muscle physiology.

Criteria for exam assessment

Description of criteria for the grade 12:

The student demonstrates comprehensive knowledge in relation to physiological adaptations to strength training with special focus on the mechanisms underlying muscle hypertrophy and neural adaptations.

The student demonstrates in the assignment the capability to analyze and discuss possible interacting factors and relate physiological adaptations to functional changes.

The student has written a well-structured and clearly presented assignment including critical evaluation of and citation of relevant scientific literature.
