Membrane Proteins: Natural Nanomachines (Memprot)

Course content

Membrane proteins are key players in cell function. The purpose of this course is to explore this superfamily of proteins (structure and function). The course will contain a review of examples of membrane proteins used in Bionanotechnology.

Lab exercises will cover a series of standard applications in biochemistry and cell biology for membrane protein investigations

Learning outcome

The overall goal of the course is to learn and understand how the main categories of membrane proteins function. Completing the course the student is expect to have acquired

Knowledge:
Understand basic principles of signaling for the different categories of membrane proteins
Understand basic principles of structure and function relationship for the different categories of membrane proteins
Introduction regarding the use of membrane proteins in Bionanotechnology
Basics in biochemistry for the purification of membrane proteins (Lab exercise)
Cellular assays on membrane proteins (Lab exercise)


Skills: 
Run classical experiments for the characterization of membrane proteins.

Competencies
Explain the basic modes of function of membrane proteins superfamilies
Explain structure / function relationships of some membrane proteins

 

The course is composed of lectures and lab exercises covering various applications on membrane proteins.
28 hours of lecture and exercises (4 hours per week during 7 weeks).
20 hours of lab exercises (4 sessions of 5 hours)

introductory course in protein biochemistry for students from other fields

Laboratory exercises are mandatory. One report per laboratory exercise should be submitted. One of them will be presented orally.
The four reports and the oral presentation weighs 40% of the final grade. The written exam weighs 60%.
