Course content

  • The course has emphasis on application of geophysical methods to provide information about Earth structure and processes that determine the tectonic and plate tectonic evolution.
  • Reading and presenting in talks and writing the content of  scientific literature.
  • Project work on integrated geophysical interpretation of the lithospheric structure in regional context
  • The teaching is held as seminars with substantial dialogue between the lecturer and students, and a project exercise where geophysical concepts are applied

Learning outcome


  • Application of geophysical methods to provide understanding of tectonic and plate tectonic processes
  • Importance of integrated interpretation
  • Relation between structure and composition of the Earth at all scales and the physical processes in the Earth’s interior


  • Understanding the current use of geophysical methods for studying the Earth.
  • Selection of suitable methods for a specific geological - geophysical task
  • Knowledge of the importance of uncertainties in data and models
  • Document models in written and oral presentation


  • Have overview of the suitability of geophysical methods;
  • Be able  to select the appropriate physical parameters for solving specific tasks
  • Understand the importance of noise and uncertainty of geophysical interpretations
  • Be able to apply specific geophysical methods at professional level
  • Be able to interpret regional and local geological processes through interpretation of geophysical data;
  • Communicate results by written and oral presentation.

Recommended prerequisites

BSc in Geology-Geoscience or equivalent. In order to participate students must have a knowledge corresponding to that obtained in part 1 of the course.

A written assignment is prepared during the course and must be handed in prior to the exam week. The oral exam uses the written assignment as its point of departure. It includes the titles listed in the officially approved reading list. A combined grade is given after the oral exam.
