Course content

This course introduces the students to the methodological framework of corpus linguistics, which has been described as the study of “real life” language use. Corpus linguistics is a rapidly growing field, and, as a methodology, it has seen use in a range of different linguistic disciplines such as sociolinguistics, cognitive linguistics, discourse studies, cultural linguistics, historical linguistics, and second/foreign language teaching/learning as well as beyond linguistics in, for instance, the social sciences. A corpus is a database of naturally occurring language in which corpus linguists identify patterns of language use via dedicated computer software. This course will introduce the students to corpus-based analysis of English and aims to familiarize students with key concepts and analytical techniques and tools within corpus linguistics, as we address grammatical, lexical, discursive and other phenomena within the English language. Students will be given hands-on experience in corpus-linguistic analysis and corpus compilation, and we will also discuss the notions of empiricism and qualitative vs. quantitative analysis in linguistics. In addition to insights into corpus-linguistic methodology and experience in practical application thereof, students will acquire transferable skills, such as text-/data-mining techniques, use of spreadsheets, and application of computer tools in the analysis of language data.
